A taste of the 2019 Roscoe Village Wine Stroll

“To anyone who says I don’t like red wine, I can say I disagree.”

Sommelier Michael Roberts is always on a mission to awaken people’s curiosity for new wines. As the in-house wine expert at The Reveler, he’s excited to have guests try a couple of his favorites at the upcoming Roscoe Village Wine Stroll on June 6th.

“These [wines] are people friendly,” Michael said as he poured us a glass of Michael David’s Petite Petit Syrah, a California red. “People taste it and then, they are like Ok, maybe I like it. Then, I say Now try it with this piece of chocolate.

Because of course, Michael is not only a sommelier but a passionate chocolatier who loves creating exciting pairing combinations to surprise his guests. He kindly gave us a crash course on wine tasting, similar to the monthly class that he offers at The Reveler, and challenged us to appreciate wines that we would otherwise overlook. He served us a glass of the 7 Hectares Rosé, which was so much more than a refreshing summer wine.

“One thing that I love about certain wines, especially the ones from Southern France, is that they’re like an erector set on your palate. It keeps on building and building every time you take a sip.”

To say that Michael is the friendliest neighborhood sommelier we’ve met is an understatement. It was the perfect first stop to get a glimpse of what this neighborhood wine stroll is going to be all about. The Reveler will have a special tasting room for guests and will have bottles available for those who would like to purchase their favorites.

Now on its 6th year, the annual Roscoe Village Wine Stroll will give everyone the opportunity to visit different shops and restaurants while sipping wine from around the world. Every vendor will tell you a little more about their business, the neighborhood, and of course, the wine. A red and white wine will be featured at each location, in addition to tasty hors d’oeuvres along the tour.

Another participating venue is Le Sud, a beautiful cozy restaurant inspired by the cuisine of Southern France, where we also stopped for a little pre-tasting.

Opened since last September, the restaurant serves delightful bites and dishes that bring together Old World-traditions with modern techniques, always executed with the freshest ingredients. The décor is also stunning, with lots of classic French details that are vibrant and inviting.

Manager Jackie Kane invited us to a glass of Cave De Pomerols Picpoul De Pinet, Picpoul, a very crisp, slightly citrusy and very delicate white wine. We also had a glass of their Cotes du Rhone Coste de Chaude, Grenache Syrah Blend. It paired beautifully with their house-made charcuterie plate that included a duck rillette and duck liver mousse, pickled Swiss chard stems and pickled blueberries. Everything we didn’t know we wanted.

Between the ambiance, the wine, and the delicious food, we were instantly in a celebratory mood — exactly what we would expect from a neighborhood festival. Needless to say, we can’t wait to see what else will be offered by the other locations.

If you’re also ready for great sips and bites, come with us to the Sixth Annual Roscoe Village Wine Stroll along Belmont and Roscoe next June 6th from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Stroll tickets are $50 dollars per person when purchased in advance and there will be a trolley available between Belmont and Roscoe.

Check-in at First Centennial Mortgage at 2058 W Belmont Ave to receive your wine glass, wrist band, and Wine Stroll map. You'll also enjoy samples from Katherine Anne Confections and Dip and Sip Donuts Chicago.

*Note: Kimchi & Beans was invited by the Roscoe Village Chamber of Commerce to enjoy the pre-tasting and stroll. However, all opinions are our own.
